Analysis Of Hip Hop Adverts

Vibe Magazine 1 :

  • They have a celebrity HipHop singer on the cover of the magazine; with his face and body posture clearly displayed.

  • Good medium shot of him standing, with his arms out like hes asking the viewer a question.

  • The colour scheme is black, white and yellow whichu are normally seen as clothing colours for HipHop artists

  • His shirt says 'R U Still Down?', which is addressing the audience and getting them to answer his question in their heads, and once they answer is they may want to buy the magazine as it may attract them.

  • Once they see the celebrity on the magazine they may want to buy the magazine just because the hiphop star is on it.

  • They've advertised other hiphop celebrities on the magazine.

Vibe Magazine 2 :

  • The magazine cover has 3 hiphop Artists on it, all being big names in the business.

  • All charcters are wearing smart, serious and business like clothing, and Hiphop is heavily revolved around money.

  • The two men at the front are showing off their jewellery, and jewellery being a important thing in the hiphop culture, like a phallic symbol

  • They have a very plain colour scheme, just black, however this will portray the business aspect of the genre of music, and how rich these people are.
  • The page isnt flooded with adverts and unrelated things, they have the pictur and a few sentences around it.

Vibe Magazine 3 :

  • The artist is standing in the middle of the magazine and staring right at the audience, giving the effect he is constantly watching you

  • The artist also has his jewellery on show, which is portraying his arrogance, which is a big thing in the whole hiphop culture.

  • He also is wearing a t shirt which says 'UNSTOPPABLE' which he wore as at the current time his music life really took off, as his album done very well, so promoting an artists achievements is a common thing to do on hiphop magazines.

  • The character is also wearing all black, this foreshadows the seriousness of him and that he dosen't wear bright colours; which relates to his music, so having clothing relate to the artists music is very common.

  • The camera is a medium shot of the artist, close enough to show his face well and far enough to show his 'gangsta' posture.

  • There are no bright colours to take away any attention from his face, as its he's very famous now.

  • His name isn't attached to him in anyway on the magazine, as his face is too recognised to need it.

Explanation :

I have analysed these 3 magazines as they all have a famous, successful and world class hiphop artists on the covers.

Vibe also being 1 of the world biggest if not the biggest hiphop magazine in the world, they would know how to make a front cover for a chosen artist, so to analyse how they constructed one would make sense.

Furthermore, they'v ealso done a very good job, they'd taken into account the rule of 3rd and the conventions to do with hiphop, which make all 3 magazines very successful.

Initial Ideas

We spoke as a group for several minutes about the genre's of music we listened to, in addition to what music genre we where more 'passionate' about as then we'd want to work harder and apply more effort
After finalising we all listened to HipHop we beguns by writing down all the micro genre's within our genre and the artists, and eventually we decided the artist we'd like to make our music video on was drake.

We picked this genre as its different to most genre's which people make a music video to in their A levels, in addition we felt it had a lot ot offer then our genres, we are able to use the lyrics, beat and artists image to create the music video what we want, and we felt there a lot more effective to0 do with this genre if done correctly.

Roles

Our group consists of 3 members, me (Arun), George T and Vida K, these are our following roles:

Arun - Get the actors and organise costume's

Vida - Handling on site

George - Get the props

General Roles for everyone -
  • Picking location
  • Making a shooting timetable
  • Camera work
  • Editing the video

Technical Tutorial (Photoshop)

I recently had a tutorial lesson on photoshop in which we done a photoshoot and then uploaded the pictures, and we asked to make the front cover of a CD case using one, however we'd have to edit the picture to make it look professional as such.

I learnt the following techniques and did them successfully:

Inserting pictures from a folder into photoshop

Creating layers in photoshop

Moving layers in front and behind other layers

Using the 'Rectangular Marquee Tool'

Using the 'Brush Tool'

Using the 'Magic Wand'

Using the 'Eraser Tool'

Using the 'Paint Bucket' tool

Using the 'Horizontal Type' tool

Using the 'Eye Dropper' tool

Using the 'Set Foreground Colour' tool

Adding a outer glow to a picture

Rotating pictures and text

Importing fonts from a different website

Technical Tutorial 1 - Green Screen, Music Video Shoot and Final Cut

Green Screen:

I recently used and learnt how to used a green screen production package for a music video scenario.

The packaged we used looked like so...

We had a artist infront of the screen performing and where told how its used, what for and they we all got a go of seeing it used for its purpose.

Things to note about the green screen :

  • The green screen must be a constant colour, for example there cannot be and shadows on the green screen as when it comes to editing out the green cololour it wont work properly.

  • There must be atleast 2 contant lights, preferably 3 lights, one from the left, one from the right and another upabove the artist(s) so eliminate all shadows.

  • The green screen must also come down onto and past the floor like so in the picture so when taking the green out there isnt a faint black line on the floor.

Music Video Shoot:

I learnt how to operate multiple camera's at once and how to operate them professionally in accordance to the music being used. For example, the floor director would normally say camera's stand by when they are about roll.

I also learnt the use a variety of camera shots simultaneously, for instance one is a long shot, another would be in a position for a close up and another would be hand held.

Final Cut:

I learnt how to use this program to edit a video, and also mute the audio and dub over the album version of a song so the video goes perfectly with the audio.

In addition, i learnt how to use the chromer key edit out the green colour from the green screen and how to apply any colour background to the video clip to make it look like your in a different surrounding. In addition, i also learnt how to add in a different background, for example a pre recorded clip of a surrounding.

Song Details

The song we have chosen is by Drake ns is called Successful. we have picked this song as we believe it has a lot too offer and gives us the oppertunity to show off our creative skills. It has the qualities to be a very good music video if we tackle it correctly and use the conventions we've learnt and researched on to the best of our ability.

Artist Image Annotation

This artist is wearing a contrasting colour to his background to make sure he stands out

He is wearing casual clothes however has made it his own style by tilting his hat and by his body language.

The artists clothes have a nice fit on him, their not baggy nor tight; making his look comfortable and have the style necessary

The artists clothes are mostly black, this is so foreshadow there isn't much to get in the way of this artist, he's a hiphop singer who is just himself and that what you will get from his music.

These artists are wearing slightly more fitted and tight clothing, this portrays their style is different to more hiphop singers, they have their own individual style and they are also wearing more vibrant colours then most hiphop singers. This foreshadows their music is more vibrant and there is more to it, thus telling the audience about their music before they've even listened to it, in addition that its for those people who like hiphop however don't like the whole 'gangster' version you may hear.

The artists also have adopted a more casual stance, they look more comfortable and easy, so it can hint to what their music may be like.

In the picture the artist is wearing very traditional hipho clothing, the colours black and white, in addition to the black jacket and jeans. however he has chosen to wear 'shutter' shades, these being a type of glasses more 'indie' or drum and bass music fans would wear. He has worn these as people from other genre's of music would look at him and think maybe he mite go into their genre of music or that he wants to give himself a individual image, different from the normal hiphop artists.

Furthermore, the artists body language can tell a lot, he's got a good posture and is performing to his audience, also his hand is by his waist and 1 finger is in his pocket, this posture shows he's a very strong artist yet being comfortable with himself, he isn't nervous and as the audience they would look at this and admire him more.

These 3 pictures and all of Hiphop singers, however they each have their own individual style within hiphop. You can tell this by what they wear, furthermore their posture.

For example, depending on the song they sing could wear very colorful clothing or very simple clothing, it completely relates to their style of music, or if their music is very aggressive or soft, it will show in their body language.

And for that reason our artist will most likely have clothing simular to those in the pictures, however he will wear it in a slightly different way to make it unique to our artist yet still relate to the style of the song.

For example, perhaps a leather jacket, white t shirt, black jeans and trainers (vans).

CD Cover Practise (Photoshop)

I used photoshop and learnt how to use its features and especially the ones that i would use for when making a CD cover for an artist, for example tge magic wand or text editor.

Here is my practise front cover, showing i know how to use photoshop to a extent.

Ive made it a plain black background as its a indie artist, so the audience should concentrate more on the artist as an atrists impression is very important for a indie artist.

We know he is an indie artist by the costume he's wearing as well as by his body language, its very casual and personal to him.

Ive made the text quite vibrate and outlined him in white as it gives a more 'creative' edge to his image, and it contrasts to the black background which shows he's not related to the musical sterotypes we relate to the colour black, for example rocky, dark, emotional. In fact it will give off the impression he is the opposite, more vibrant and 'happy' as such.
